Sclerotherapy Vein Treatment Information provided by ASI: Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, Boca Raton - Florida
Sclerotherapy is used to treat spider veins (telangiectasias), which are small purple and red blood vessels. Spider veins normally appear on thighs or lower legs, though they can appear anywhere on the leg. Sometimes spider veins can appear on the face. Spider veins are hereditary, and sclerotherapy, developed in the 1920s, has been a popular non-surgical procedure for many people, and can be a very good alternative to surgery. The procedure has so far been proven to be safe.
Sclerotherapy works by marking the veins to be treated while the patient is standing. Starting with the larger veins in most cases, a sclerosing solution is injected into the vein with a micro-needle. The vien turns white in reaction to the solution and then eventually disappears. Sclerotherapy treatment usually lasts between 30 minutes to an hour with little, if any discomfort involved.
Occasionally, small clots can develop at the site where the injection was made. Sclerotherapy does not require an interruption in normal activities but patients are advised to avoid vigorous activities for the first day.
The first sclerotherapy treatment corrects about 50-70% of the treated vessels, so 3-4 treatments are suggested for optimal results. Sometimes wearing thick stockings can help treated veins stay closed and reduce bruising. Color changes can appear on the skin where sclerotherapy was performed. If an underlying problem with the venous system is present the veins can reappear.
